whatever it takes

it's raining again today
pouring right now
just like yesterday and the day before
and i'm not okay with that
cos' there's the house I drove by today
at the highway turnoff
police all around
faces distraught
meager belongings at the gate
of a home being torn apart

the traffic was heavy
i was there for a while
on the outside looking in
my camera at the ready
but i could not take take the shot
because those people are now homeless
in this, the rain
and they needed more than a photograph
they needed so much more than that

and i closed my eyes
and took mental pictures instead
of the injustice in this society
of a nation asleep too long
of people advantaged times too many
and then i moved along, went on my way
ashamed to say
hoping to hell that things were not as bad as they seemed

this happened for a reason, i witnessed this for a reason
a deeper reason not plain to most
a signal, a sign
for those that would take note
for those that would care
to do something, anything
whatever it takes
cos' it's only right
